The Chinese have cultivated silkworms for 5,000 years. How is silk made ? the silk worm cocoons itself by producing a filament known a fibroin, a protein substance from the Spinneret within its head. In silk production, this silky filament is unwound from the cocoon, then reeled together to create strands. These fine strands are then wound together in a process called “throwing” to produce silk yarn.
